Our Graduate Programme - nineteen47 Academy

Our Graduate Programme is open annually to graduate and post-graduate candidates who have completed degrees or other similar qualifications in Planning or Urban Design subjects.

From day one, you will be part of a supportive team working on a range of development projects across the housing, commercial, leisure, mixed-use regeneration and blue light sectors. You will work with colleagues at all levels, who will support you to develop your knowledge and experience of the built environment. This includes providing our planners with structured mentoring to work towards Chartered Membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), and our urban designers with advanced training in packages including AutoCAD, Vectorworks and inDesign. We seek to provide forward thinking, professional, and constructive advice to help develop strong working relationships with both clients and Local Planning Authorities. To do this, we work collaboratively as a team, and welcome the input of new team members to support your own professional development and that of the business.

We welcome the submission of relevant CV's, accompanied by a covering letter telling us why you want to be part of nineteen47's team to: [email protected]. We see to offer short work experience opportunities throughout the year and to select graduate candidates during the summer/autumn period.

Richard Walshaw

Director

Richard Walshaw

Director

Meet Richard. Urban designer and co-founder of nineteen47, Richard is always thinking about design. Happiest when challenged to deliver on a client brief and create something striking, Richard loves working with house builders and land owners throughout the UK.

Richard is partial to a detour onto a new residential scheme, much to his family’s displeasure! On a recent trip to the Lake District, he spotted Whinlatter Drive in Kendal, and just had to inspect the impressive street trees, wide hedges, natural swales and stone walls. He was even taken with the headwall for the drainage!

When he’s not dreaming about design, the father of four can be found on the football field, running a community youth group and football team in his hometown, Sheffield. His party trick is that he can speak Zulu from his time in South Africa (but only ask him about that if you have 2 hours to spare!)

Jamie Pyper

Director

Jamie Pyper

Director

Meet Jamie. Planning consultant and fellow co-founder, Jamie started his career in Local Government and has spent the past 16 years working in private consultancy. Happiest when trying to unpick a problem and find solutions, Jamie loves navigating planning obstacles for a diverse range of clients from large PLCs and establishments to SMEs and individuals.

One of Jamie’s favourite projects was achieving planning permission for a new animal care and equine college campus in the Midlands. He got to meet (well, stand relatively close to) Princess Anne at the opening ceremony (they’ve not kept in touch).

When Jamie isn’t scaling mountains of planning paperwork, he enjoys hill walking, and has been climbing the Scottish Munros for a number of years. He’s done 50 so far, so only 232 to go (not that we’re counting).

Ben Williams

Director

Ben Williams

Director

Meet Ben. Qualified Urban Designer and Recognised Practitioner, Ben spent the early part of his career in the technical team at a National Housebuilder. He also worked for a large architects’ practice, with project work across employment, distribution and retail sectors.

Spending much of his earlier life travelling (pre-children!), one of Ben’s favourite architectural experiences occurred when wandering the streets of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). He was struck by the French colonial villas set out along the now bustling and vividly coloured grid-structure street network.

When he’s not dreaming up new designs, Ben enjoys a round of golf (when Dad’s Taxi commitments allow) and is especially fond of “the Links”. Annual society weekends over 15 years have enabled Ben to play most of the highest ranked seaside courses in England and Wales.

Carl Stott

Director

Carl Stott

Director

Meet Carl. An experienced Planner and environmental expert, Carl relishes a complicated and multi-disciplined planning challenge.  With an eye for detail and extensive experience in planning and environmental consultancy, as well as a background in Local Government, Carl likes nothing better than getting his teeth into the EIA process.

Carl has worked on several football stadiums and training facilities, including Chelsea FC and Everton FC. But his favourite was Rotherham United’s New York Stadium, where he co-ordinated Environmental Statements for the groundworks, to raise the riverside site out of a flood zone and for the stadium itself.

When he’s not planning new residential, commercial and leisure developments, Carl can be found trying to improve his 5km times on the Parkrun circuit or watching Peterborough Utd on a cold ‘away’ terrace with a cup of hot Bovril.

Clare Plant

Director

Clare Plant

Director

Meet Clare. New to nineteen47, Clare is an experienced planner and qualified development surveyor. Passionate about planning and its influence on the environment, Clare is always considering what makes a commercially sound planning scheme.

Taking a holistic approach, Clare loves seeing a project unfold. On a favourite project of hers in Norfolk, she brought together a golf course owner and a regional house-builder to deliver a mutually beneficial residential development opportunity. Clare managed the project from start to finish and was delighted to get a sneak peak of the shiny new show home on a subsequent holiday in the area.

As part-owner of a Midlands micro-brewery, when she’s not planning developments for clients, Clare is planning her next craft ale (which our clients tell us is rather tasty!)
